Getting Personal with our Founder & Designer Ally Ferguson For Voyage LA

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. The youngest of three siblings both of which are two older brothers. My parents were hippies who moved here from the east coast in the ’60s in search of that sunshine state of mind. They landed in Manhattan Beach, CA where they pioneered young entrepreneurship in architecture. My family was a massive influence on the way I see the world. I was always a tomboy who loved to surf, skateboard and snowboard. I embodied the epitome of the board sports fashion from the late ’80s and ’90s via my older brothers from their perspective, hand-me-downs and encouragement. I was the little sister who could hang with the boys haha. They were always proud of how good I was for a “girl”.

In conjunction with their influence, my mom was my spiritual guru. She is the reason I had a head start into meditation, spirituality, and philosophy which comes into my work with Seeker. There was always a higher power or synchronicity at play. Whenever we really wanted to manifest something within our family we have a bit of a ritual which still is active within our home. My mother is a dreamer. Thank goodness I’m not the only one.

Last but not least my father is an architect. He’s taught me so much about design, form and perfectionism. He piqued my interest and ability into visual building. Which has now been translated into fashion. Dimension has some sort of odd savant tendency within me now that takes place through my design. I presume this is from being groomed my whole life with attention to dimension to create form.

The reason this is all so important to my story is when you mix them all together you can translate that into Seeker. An Organic Hemp Clothing Collection, Inspired by Eastern Tradition with a Modern design perspective.

Professionally, I learned by doing when it comes to fashion. I went to school for business but I knew the only career I ever wanted to work in was fashion. My first job was a summer sales position at Vans when I was 15. From there, I asked everyone I met who worked in the field questions about what they do. Honestly, I worked my way up from the sales floor at G-star, into wholesale for Ed-Hardy, onto brand management for Local Celebrity. I started my first company at 26 and taught myself how to work through Los Angeles cut & sew production. I was then cherry picked to manage a production facility there after and partner on a menswear brand. When I turned 30, I didn’t agree with how the ancient fashion business was in power and I knew it was time for a major shift. To make thoughtful clothing, built with spirit, transparency and earth friendly materials.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is clothing. Creating a brand that is easily identifiable that has no branding is what I love to do. I make a minimalist uniform for the wearer to feel their absolute best. My favorite thing about creating clothing is the compliments that my clients receive when wearing the garments. It’s like a built-in therapy to make the wearer feel as though they are beaming and also building community through conversation. The garments are no doubt a conversation piece from their elevated design and because they’re made of organic hemp in Los Angeles CA. People love to tell that story or feel akin to the name ‘SEEKER” because we all tend to be seeking. My hope is that the brand will embody intention in the wearer’s daily life and that with those insights it will encourage anyone they encounter to live more thoughtfully.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Being an artist can totally be lonely because we tend to work all day creating which is done by ourselves. My advice is to reach out to other artists around you to meet up. Don’t be scared to go out alone to places or events that interest you. Talk about what you do and it’s easy to make friends or have people point you in the right direction. Everyone loves having a friend who is in the arts! Artists are celebrated. Never forget that.
